The Honest Truth: What the world needs now….is Mugs O’Love.

Published on

This year for Mandela Day the Girl Guides of the Western Cape came together to make over a 1000 Mugs of Love! When asked how this idea came about, Tanya Prinsloo, Communications and Marketing Chairperson, explained “I was sitting with a friend in her kitchen and she pulled out this old mug from the back of her cupboard to show me the logo. This made me suddenly think of all the mugs in the back of my own kitchen cupboard, the ones I never use. I realised that most people could say the same, so that’s when I thought why not put these unused mugs to some good use.”

We decided to fill these mugs with “love”. Items such as hot chocolate or cappucino sachets, biscuits, soup, chocolates, etc…anything to show we care. These items, together with the coffee mugs were donated by members of Girl Guides, family, friends and members of the public! We got an incredible response and managed to bypass our target of 670 to over a 1000!!!

These Mugs O’Love are being distributed to various recipients all over the Cape. Mugs will go to, amongst others, the moms at Tygerberg Children’s Hospital, NSRI, to recidents at the Parow North Care Centre, Aanhouwen in Somerset West, Golden Oldies in Tableview, Huis Luckhoff in Rondebosch, the elderly in Blikkiesdorp and Christ the Mediator in Mitchells Plain, girls from Little Lambs in Du Noon, 126 children at the Khayelitsha Educare and to the Elim Night Shelter in Elsies River. Mugs will also be handed out at some police stations and fire departments.
These mugs are being distributed during the Girl Guides’ Mandela Week of Love! Girl Guides are known for their giving back to the community as service is an important part of their programme. “Teaching girls from a young age to give back and to foster a love for helping others is so important and what Guiding is all about.” says Tanya.
