The problem of underage drinking has been a thorn in the side of South African society for years and needs urgent intervention from Government and other role-players to be sufficiently addressed.

This is according to Professor Charles Parry, the Director of the Alcohol, Tobacco & Other Drug Research Unit, at the South African Medical Research Council.

Parry says the recent spate of tavern tragedies reinforces the need to relook whether there is enough being done to effectively tackle drinking among teenagers.

Parry says several factors contribute to underage drinking.
