President Cyril Ramaphosa has called on South Africans to play a more active role in helping fight crime in their communities.

During the annual South African Police Service Commemoration Day, Ramaphosa said more would also be done to bring to book those who are responsible for killing police officers.

He says 34 police officers were killed, while on duty, between 1 April 2020 and 31 March 2021.

The President says 840 officer have also, over the past year, succumbed to covid-19.

He says more should be done to bring criminals to book.
