Cape Town is aiming to become the first loadshedding-free city in South Africa.

Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis this morning announced that the City would, from today onwards, open its first round of procurement of power from independent power producers.

The mayor was addressing delegates at the Solar Power Africa conference at the CTICC.

Hill-Lewis says the City would, instead of the 100 MW allocation – under the municipal energy resilience initiative – procure up to 300MW of solar-harvested electricity.
