The acting Health Minister, Mmamoloko Kubayi says the close to 3-million doses of Covid-19 vaccine, received from the United States over the weekend, will significantly boost South Africa’s vaccination capabilities.

Kubayi over the weekend took receipt of 2.8-million Pfizer vaccine doses at the OR Tambo International Airport.

The Minister says a further 5.6-million doses will be delivered tomorrow.

The acting Health Minister, Mmamoloko Kubayi has warned that if the number of Covid-19 infections in the Western Cape continues to increase Government might have to reconsider changing lock down regulations to curb the further spread of the virus here.

The Minister says despite a downward trend in Covid-19 numbers there has been a worrying increase in infections in the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.

The Western Cape, in the past 24 hours, recorded the majority of now infections, overtaking Gauteng.

The Department of Health says it is readying all of its systems to start vaccinating public-service employees at the country’s correctional services facilities.

Acting Health Minister, Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane says a date for these vaccinations has not yet been confirmed.

She says this leg of the country’s vaccination-drive may be rolled out at the same time as that of police officers.

The Minister says SANDF-members would also start receiving their jabs on 5 July.

The acting Health Minister, Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane says even though Covid-19 field hospitals in Gauteng were decommissioned last year, there are still enough hospital beds available to accommodate and treat critically ill patients.

The Minister says private healthcare facilities are now assisting Government to absorb and treat patients that require urgent medical attention.

She says field-hospitals, such as the NASREC centre, were deactivated in 2020 due to cost-concerns and the low-levels of hospitalization.
