
The City’s Safety and Security Directorate says Cape Town firefighters responded to more than 200 vegetation fires this past weekend.
While law-enforcers had their hands full – with thousands flocking to beaches because of the hot weather – firefighters were called out to attend to 235 wildfires across the Metro.
Mayoral committee member, JP Smith says 48 of these fires occurred in residential areas.

The City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management Department and Fire & Rescue Service have initiated a public education and awareness campaign after an increase in informal settlement fires the last few months.

Forestry and Environment Minister, Barbara Creecy says her Department has now instituted an investigation into the Kleinmond fires.
The fire, which broke out over the weekend, has destroyed more than 5,400 hectares of vegetation.
Creecy says initial investigations show the fire started in the Department’s Pine Plantation in the Kleinmond area.
Creecy also thanked firefighters who helped douse the flames.
