Western Cape residents, living in informal settlements and townships, are continuously educated on how to fire-proof their homes to help avoid a loss of life or property in the Winter months.

Chief Director of Disaster Management, Colin Deiner says except for installing easy-to-use fire detectors in informal households, residents are also advised to stop using highly-flammable liquids such as paraffin for their cooking and heating needs.

Deiner says easy-to-install and cost-effective solutions work best.

He says the fires, once started, easily spread to other shacks in the vicinity.
