Angel Campey of the Smile Drive first found her feet as a stand-up comedian.

Having graduated from UCT Film and Media in 2004, Angel went to teach English in South Korea for 2 years because ‘Korea’ sounded like ‘Career,’ and she thought it was the closest she’d get to one. She returned to SA for the 2010 Fifa World Cup and put down roots.

Thanks to her flat-mate Siv Ngesi, she started Stand-up comedy in 2011 on Long Street, Cape Town, and Angel’s quirky quick wit and sharp tongue quickly had her climbing the rungs, appearing on Comedy Central Africa’s “Kings and Queens of Comedy” just a year later. She became a regular at all of the comedy festivals, toured the country with her self written one-woman shows, selling out at the National Arts Festivals and is now a well known name in SA stand-up.

Our Angel even toured internationally performing on some of the most famous comedy stages in the world from New York City to Montreal, Canada and even around Africa with sold out shows in Lagos, Nigeria and Tanzania.

In 2019 Angel won the CTX award for the Top Female comedian in Cape Town and in 2020 she walked away with the South African Comedy Award for the Top Comedian on radio (yup, that’s for us and her work on the Smile Drive!)

Angel is also a screenwriter and her satire work for multi award winning ‘ZAnews-Puppet Nation’ even won her a SAFTA for best TV comedy writing in 2018.  She’s one of the writers of the hot Youtube satire show called ‘Politically Aweh’ and was the head writer alongside Riaad Moosa and Stuart Taylor for SABC2’s Comedy Mixtape season 1 which aired in 2021.

Angel started on the Smile Drive with Maurice Carpede full time in 2018 and their antics got them nominated for a South African Radio Award in 2020 for the Best Drive Show in the country.

You can catch them weekdays from 3-6pm as they take you home with laughter.
