Many NUMSA members have staged a walk-out during the union’s 11th annual congress in Cape Town. Last night, Numsa’s president Andrew Chirwa and secretary-general Irvin Jim were re-elected to their positions unopposed. Puleng Phaka was elected second deputy president – a position previously held by Ruth Ntlokotse, who could not attend the congress as she has been suspended, along with 30 other union members. The union yesterday complied with some issues raised in an interdict, by allowing the suspended members to attend, but they then walked out.
