In the next 3 months, more than 1 000 MW of electricity could be added to the national grid to boost Eskom’s capacity. The Energy Crisis Committee, comprising of several government ministers, yesterday gave an update on their progress, to source extra power.

Meanwhile: The Minister of Trade and Industry, Ebrahim Patel says the lowering of local requirements for solar PV (photovoltaic) will help the country, achieve long-term energy supply. He says the localisation of the solar power industry is key in building energy security.
At the same time: An energy expert, Professor Sampson Mamphweli, has said, South Africa’s solar power industry is set to boom, following the President’s push for rooftop installations, in his energy reform plan. Mamphweli says for the plan to succeed, the country will need to up its game in solar energy manufacturing, along with a new crop of skilled solar installers.
