Hermanus Police say they were attacked by residents after trying to intervene in an alleged incident of vigilantism. According to the Cape Times, 3 people were burned to death, after being accused of theft, assault and community terrorism. SAPS spokesperson, FC van Wyk says no one was arrested and the police have asked the community to come forward with information.
Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis says the Rail Enforcement Unit was an effective deterrent against vandalism, and they hope the Unit will soon be re-established. This is after a preliminary agreement was reached between the City’s Safety and Security directorate and the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa. Hill-Lewis says the Unit will be supported by drones and the Eye-in-the-Sky digital surveillance and evidence management system.
