The Acting Minister of Health Mmamoloko Kubayi-Nugabane says those, 50 years and older, will be able to register on the EVDS system from 1 July. They will then be able to receive their inoculation, from 15 July.
Kubayi-Ngubane has asked people to bring senior citizens along when they go to register. She says the third wave in the country is largely being driven by the surge in Gauteng, with the Western Cape, the next most affected province.
She says the wave in Gauteng could spill over into the rest of the country. Kubayi-Ngubane will meet with the Ministerial Advisory Committee tomorrow to discuss interventions during the third wave.
Kubayi-Ngubane says amid this concern, the rate of vaccination is starting to pick up.
This as a steady stream of vaccines are expected for the rest of the year.
Ngubane-Kubayi says the department will present a report to the National Coronavirus Command Council next week and a decision on imposing additional Covid-19 restrictions will be taken by them.
